Our first pregnancy

Ashwini and I had been trying to get pregnant for a couple of months. And like many other couples who are trying in earnest, we weren’t having much luck.
But then one day, Ashwini announced that “she was late.” The next morning [May 30, 2006] we were up at 5:30. Neither of us had got much sleep in the night. It was time to take the home pregnancy test.
With much anticipation and trepidation we both peered at the test. The magical 2 lines were there!!!
It was a time of mixed emotions for both of us. Finally, what we had been trying for had borne fruit (literally too!!), but it was going to be the beginning of a whole new life. There were going to be many changes that we could only hope we’d be ready for in time.
But I was ECSTATIC!!! I wanted to shout out the news to all. We settled for telephoning our parents and my sister and let them in on our euphoria.
I must confess that this news brought about profound emotions within me. The thought that I was going to be a parent made me feel on top of the world and somewhat invincible. Can’t explain that one though!!

Today, we had an important sonography exam. Ashwini’s gynaec called it a exam to check for abnnormalities. I would have preferred such an exam to be done much earlier, but after 20 weeks is when its meant to be performed, I can’t argue.
Sachin, a friend of ours had mentioned that this was an important exam and that I should be there. Who knows, we might even discover the sex of the baby. Which had resulted in us arriving at the clinic eyes eager and peeled and imagination all fired up; determined to discover the sex as what each of us were secretly hoping for.
One cannot describe the feeling of seeing one’s baby moving around. Hands, legs, feet, the spinal column… we even saw the baby turn a somersault!! The doctor mentioned that the baby was sleeping with its head on one arm… the cute thing.
He also said that everything was fine and that there was nothing to worry about. Touch wood!!

Today was another routine sonography exam. I hadn’t been able to make it for the last one so was keen to see the baby. And was I rewarded… we saw the baby lying across the pelvis. It was still resting its head on one arm (I think this kid is going to be big on siestas!!). And then we saw it yawn!!! This was the first time we saw the baby doing something. Wanted to reach out somehow and stroke its head, caress its cheek, ANYTHING!!! COULDN’T I DO ANYTHING??

We were invited to Priya’s farewell by CD and Oihika. The party was on therooftop of their building. This was despite Oihika being 7 months pregnant, with twins. When we got there, it was really funny to see the 2 mommies-to-be rubbing tummies with each other and then swapping tales of doctor visits, sonographies and baby shopping.
The party was great fun. It was a little windy which made it quite pleasant, given the sultry warm weather we’re having during the day. One also got a great view of the city’s coastline – from Bandra to Worli, from the rooftop.

8 months into the pregnancy… we’re now almost at the end of all the baby shopping that we wanted to do before the little one arrives. Hopefully some of the other stuff will get taken care of by gifts. Anything more will have to wait till Ashwini feels like stepping out of the house. She’s committed to becoming a ‘yummy mummy’, so we should be up and about and showing the little one the sights of Mumbai soon.
We’ve got the all-important carrier-cum-rocker-cum-car seat… clothes and loads of nappies, diapers et al. Bought the cutest nail clipper (had never wondered how babies nails were cut till I saw this tool) and a device to help clear a stuffy nose (who thought of that one??) The babies outfits cost as much as mine!!
Still haven’t decided on a cot though. Saw some nice designs at a couple of shops, realised that none will fit next to our bed until some carpentry work is undertaken and therefore put it off. Need to get that one soon. Sometimes I feel that too many options just confuse rather than help in any way.
Among the other things that we’ve been putting off is deciding on names for the baby. That’s on the list of to-be-done-soon.
And today is Christmas eve. Party week has begun. We’re wondering if we should go out together, just the two of us; as we’re not going to have that opportunity for a while. But Ashu also gets tired easily, so this is going to be decided either way, at the nth minute only.

I couldn’t make it to the appointment with the gynaec today. Ashwini called me after the sono saying that the baby was now in a breech position. In fact it’s head was up. Which meant that now unless the little one did a full somersault in the next few days, Ashwini would have to deliver via C-section.
The gynaec recommended that we work towards a day so that the surgery could be planned and it would be easier for the mother on the big day. We had to make the decision on the kind of anaesthetic Ashwini wanted to take – general, spinal or epidural. We still haven’t decided on that one.

The beginning of the 9th month. We sat down to decide on names. Discussed and threw names around till late into the night. No agreement though!!

We bought the cot, bedding and soft toys today. Finally, the shopping’s done. We’re ready for the baby’s arrival, we hope. Next step, to pack Ashwini’s bag for the trip to the hospital.
